win or lose I'm doing the next one!

Same here... I'll do my best anyway.... I have one short that has been on the back burner longer than I care to think about, one incomplete that might actually be a novel length and a new one I just started based on a stray thought about pirates...

Of course whatever the theme turns out to be it won't match anything I'm currently working on.

I'm hoping to have a shot at it too... ...can you tell me when the next keywords will be published? As I understand it, we have the whole of May to do the actual writing, do I'm assuming it will be a few days before this to provide time for reflection and meditation prior to the writing.

Same as the last round. The 3 elements are not revealed until the new cycle opens. So May 1.

The cryptic selection process of who chooses the theme is still underway. I have one decline, one decline by silence and one query of interest just went out... Obviously whomever selects the theme gets a head start and I do get notified beforehand, but I try and keep that period as short as I can. I prefer not to know more than 48 hours ahead... But need at least a couple hours notice.

On a new topic...

How does everyone feel about a bump in the word count limit?

Say; 5,000 words?

I'm actually slightly confused about why there is a limit. If someone wants to do a porn NaNoWriMo for it, why not let them? Of course, they pretty much guarantee few will read their work quickly enough to post so they shoot themselves in the foot, but why not leave the number of words needed for their tale to the author and the willingness to read them to the reader?

(with my reader hat on) For me, too much quantity makes it hard to judge quality. And I'd be distressed if an entry was too long for me to read cuz I'd feel I couldn't vote fairly. I don't personally like my reading to feel like a chore where I "have" to finish this huge novel within a time limit and that wouldn't put me kindly disposed toward judging the entry either.

Just some reasons why word count limits are helpful, not to say there aren't any reasons against them.

Kitty got around the word count limit fairly by writing a sequel/companion piece that is not included in the contest.

The word count bump doesn't bother me one way or the other. It would certainly give a little more leeway to develop something a bit more complicated, but for me, it'll be what it's going to be and I highly doubt I'll hedge anywhere near 5,000. :)

Of the 5 stories entered last cycle, only two were close to the word count limit; Father of the Year at 3118 words and Chit at 3081. Hell's Angelica came 3rd in volume with 2359 and the other entries (The Hunting Club: Victoria and The one who stayed) were short of 2000 words.

My reasoning on a word count limit is that it is an attempt to help level the playing field. More words equals more of an opportunity to develop character, to develop plot and setting, to describe longer passages of sexually explicit imagery and action. The longer the story (generally) the more developed it is and the more engaging and immersive it has a chance to become.

Thus the word count limit. Someone prolific who can layer in detail unendingly in an appealing way must force themselves to be economical. Someone who writes more curt and sparingly gets encouraged to open up more, to add more detail and fill the story out...

Wow... Who knew? The cryptic selection process to find someone to pick the next theme keeps drawing a blank.

One decline, two abstentions by silence... I have my fourth query out there.

I appreciate the offer, Darlin'. However, it should probably get spread around a bit before we repeat...

Why not just have people throw out suggestions and you pick however many you like. Hell you could have ideas for years just by keeping a tab on the suggestion and marking off the ones used. Even then you could recycle them after say a year.
So far I can't remember ever being wrong in a judgement of character of someone. Then again I tend to hold onto it until I get to know them a bit. Sometimes intuitively I know someone's a retard though.

If it is a one person decision it should have a cohesiveness that is pleasing and easy to work with. I think Red did a great job coming up with Abduction/Underworld/Betrayal.

If the cryptic selection process breaks down this round, I am the failsafe and I'll come up with 3 elements. Then I'll amass a list of volunteers to comb through on successive rounds.

I agree, I liked reds themes, but everyone could pick three or four. Just a thought.

I am interested in throwing my name into the potential writers pool if possible.

This sounds like a very interesting chance to branch out a bit.

Glad to have you and everyone is welcome. All it takes is a membership on RC.

May 1st the new theme will be announced and any writer interested simply meets the theme and keeps under the word count and they can enter. The entry period will be the entire month of May and the voting period will be the entire month of June.

Check the other threads in this forum for more details.
