Technical Difficulties On Tumblr
« on: March 24, 2015, 10:33:48 PM »
Ok. I am being hacked on my tumblr account and I have no idea how to make it stop. I've deleted all my cookies, changed passwords, added extra security in which a new, on the spot password has to be sent via text and re-entered by me every time I log in, and even weeded out the people I follow in case I'm following some weird porn site that is automatically hacked into anyone who follows them. Even with all of this, someone/something is still posting on my page. I would email the help people on tumblr, but I'm this little measly board with only 86 followers, who stays just under the radar. I'm afraid if I send them to my page to check it out, they might shut me down for some of the more rapey stuff I post.

Here's an example of a post:

"Neilla Escott wants to take a love rehab with Snelal"

They are all different, it's just words, except "Snelal" is in every one.

Anyone have any ideas?? HELP!!

Did you ever get any sort of warning "from Tumblr", like being redirected to what appears to be your dashboard and being told you need to re-enter your password or change it? There is/was an exploit going around that used a misleading link on a picture to hijack your browser and claim you needed to re-enter your password, but instead of getting directed to Tumblr's real dashboard it was a fake one. Any of this sound familiar?

As for how to get rid of it, I haven't found that yet. But this article (http://techcrunch.com/2013/08/21/tumblr-says-data-corruption-not-a-hack-responsible-for-strange-posts-appearing-on-users-blogs/) appears to describe something similar, though Tumblr gives the bullshit excuse that it was a data failure that cross-posted stuff to the wrong blogs and not a hack.

I would report the problem to Tumblr. Also have their contact info handy in case you get locked out of your account by the hack.

FYI, a bit about cross-site scripting (XSS) and how hackers abuse vulnerabilities to inject code: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross-site_scripting

Usually your browser alerts you when it detects cross-site scripting vulnerabilities.

Also worth running a good spyware scan to check for keyloggers, etc.

You're speaking another language right now. Where do I get a good spyware scan that can check for keyloggers? And how do I do it?

Two free spyware/malware scanners (basically like virus checkers, but aimed at detecting less serious yet still annoying forms of assholery) are "Spybot: Search & Destroy" and "Ad-Aware". Choose the free options when you download these, they're fine for most purposes. You'll run them, they'll turn up a bunch of crap (some of which won't be a threat but you certainly won't miss it, some of which may be more serious assholery) and they'll delete it for you and free up some system resources.  If you run a scan every week or two that should keep you in good ship-shape. Spybot has some defensive settings too that can run to make your web browsers etc harder to attack.

A keylogger is a type of assholery that logs the keys you press and can steal your passwords and stuff that way. It's one reason why these gimboids may be able to circumvent you changing your password. Needless to say, if it comes up and says you had anything like that, it's worth changing all your passwords.

Finally, although this wouldn't have necessarily avoided the keylogger issue but it's good advice anyway (whenever I'm playing unpaid tech support for my family and friends I nag them to do this!), there's software you can get called a password vault - examples being "1Password", "LastPass" and "RoboForm" - that can store all your website passwords securely so you don't have to type them in manually. What this means is you can generate a different long string of gibberish password for every site because you no longer have to remember them individually. You can install these password vaults across desktop, tablet and/or phone and they tend to be either free or reasonably priced.

Thank you, Ingy and Addie - you both are amazing. I knew some super smart person/people would be able to help me... with advice I never would have known!
