I was on sleeping pills for years, I know all about getting no sleep. I never slept as a kid, never took naps, etc., I need white noise, completely dark, no noises or touching, etc.
Some things that help: a good diet, exercising in the morning (not at night), reading before bed instead of the computer. That's pretty much all I know.
But I have to emphasize the diet part. When I'm eating clean, I sleep really hard and deep, even though it's only 6-7 hours, I wake up feeling mostly refreshed (it's still not perfect).
I've thought about getting tested too, I probably should.
