No games for YOU!
« on: July 02, 2014, 04:34:00 PM »
Since I now have unlimited internet I decided to get back to playing MMORPGs. It turns out however I cannot join the subscription services, or buy extras above the increasingly limited "basic freebie" package from Electronic Arts, Blizzard OR Sony Entertainment. The reason - I moved to the UK. Perhaps more accurately, I moved from one country to another. That being the case, I cannot currently get a credit card in this country (you usually need 3 years of residency in the nation). That's ok, my pension (an NY State pension) is deposited to an American account (being an American source their direct deposit stuff only allows you to specify and American bank) from where I transfer it to the UK. That bank account still has a direct debit card with Mastercard. I used to use it in the USA... and it doesn't work in the UK. It works fine on Amazon, and on some other services, but not these. Why? Because the fraud company these companies use demands that the address on your account with that company, on your card, and on your bank account all the same. Fuck me! Whatever happened to globalisation?

I've filled in a few government forms in my time and they all have a zillion extra "Surprise complications!" boxes for people who have lived or worked abroad. I can only imagine the inconvenience of moving into another country. That credit card thing sucks ass though - big time! These days just about any internet purchases require a credit card and many commodities are such that they can only be purchased in internet.

Three years? That's just unreasonable.
Rapists should after all rape the victims exactly when, where and how the victim wants. That's how it works. Right?

I know this is a really old post and you probably already tried this, but did you try not saying you wanted to play on the european servers? (for blizzard anyway, don't know about the others)  I only ask that because i have two friends i play world of warcraft with, one is in germany, the other in singapore and neither of them had an issue when they specified american servers(the one in germany is an american transplant so was using an american debit card.)  The time difference would probably suck a bit, but the high pop servers always have a lot of people playing no matter what time it is :)   you could also just make a habit of buying time cards on amazon and using those to sign up for the services, don't need a credit card then :)

Thanks Ashley, but it's not to do with which servers I play on at all. It is specifically that the country of issue of my credit card is different from my country of residence, which their security checking service flags as fraud. I spoke to them, they explained and shrugged. A week later or so they actually sent me a message saying they had resolved it by specifically allowing THAT ONE credit card to be used, despite the country of issue problem. Of course, had they said they'd sort that out quickly at the time I called, then all would have been good. A week is a long time in gaming. I moved on. Fuck 'em. ;)

I think what she meant was, in the case of WoW, to use a workaround to not create an EU account but to create a US account. That way it will take your US debit/credit situation without a second thought. Because you'd have a US account, you'd play on US servers, so she might have mentally shorthanded it to the way she phrased things because of that.

It's a good idea and one that usually works, by the way.

Barring that, there are plenty of really good free MMOs out there anyway.

Punpun - it's not the server, it's the account security check. They don't care what server I log on. When you use a credit card to pay they obviously do a security check. Their security check flags various suspect to ensure people are not being defrauded by stolen credit cards. Included in that check, according to Blizzard, are that the address on the card is in the same country as the bank that issued the card. Now, in order to keep using it, I had to let my NY bank (actually an FCU) know that I was moving to England,  had to update my details with them. Now, my account SHOWS MY ADDRESS AS ENGLAND but the card IS STILL ISSUED BY A US BANK. Their credit check company looks at this and says wait... why would someone in England have a US bank account instead of an English one. It decides this is fishy and refuses to process the transaction. It does this at the point you register an account, not when you select which servers you are going to run on. In a couple of years time or less it won't be a problem at all as I'll have a UK credit card from my bank here. However, since I haven't been here 3 years yet banks won't issue a UK credit card, only the atm card with what is called "maestro." Almost all uk websites allow this to be used, however sites outside the uk (or maybe outside the EU, I dunno) don't have an option for maestro.

Or, as I did, move on. Since then I've picked up PayPal which works some places.

Fraud checks are computerized.

Call or email your bank and they can add a note to your file to change it.

They'll just move the transactions to human monitored and you might get annoying phone calls sometimes if they think its too different.
