Title: Random Trivia Facts
Post by: FoeChristina on August 03, 2019, 08:02:30 PM
Okay...I decided to start this thread on the advice of Raypistonprowl as I have a giant grab bag of random trivia facts and I love learning new ones. I'll go first.

Did you know:

-- The computer was originally invented 100 years earlier than first thought. But dismissed as a crackpot idea. If taken seriously we'd be 100 years further into the technological age than we already are.

-- Hawaii's Kalaupapa was a known refugee for those with leprosy

-- The Ken doll was introduced in 1961, Barbie was designed in 1959

That's a few. Anyone else have any??

 I'ma just going to keep going.

-- You can hear a blue whale's heartbeat from two miles away.

-- The average person will spend 6 months of their life waiting for a red light to turn green.

-- There's an ant specific to Manhattan. Seriously. They called it the ManhattAnt.

-- Marie Curie's (discover of polonium and radium) notebooks are still radioactive.

-- Rooster's have built in earplugs.

Pretty cool right??

I just love this stuff. Here's some more!!

-- Oranges are not naturally occurring fruits. They are actually a hybrid of tangerines and "Chinese Grapefruits" or pomelos.

-- OMG was first used IN PRINT in 1917 in a letter to Winston Churchill.

-- Hot water freezes faster than cold water. Seriously. Its called the Mpemba effect.

-- Speed dating was invented by a Jewish rabbi.

My favourite female pirate is Anne Bonney who, IIRC, got herself pregnant when she was caught, because it was illegal to execute a pregnant woman so she couldn't be hanged for her piracy.

These aren't EXACT numbers but in WWII Canada had about 50,000 German POW's. When the war ended and they were to be sent home about 6,000 begged to stay in Canada.

The Hudson Bay has a lower gravity than anywhere else in the world.

70% of the world's fresh water supply is in Canada.

Sweden and Canada are at war for a piece of land. (I'm not sure where it is. Somewhere really far North) So what each country does is send a boat up there, plant their flag and leave a bottle of booze. This has been going on for years.

Insulin was discovered in Canada and sold to the US. For $1.

The Ebola Virus Vaccine was created in Canada

In the War of 1812 Canada burned down the White House

Your hair and fingernails DO NOT continue to grow after you die. Your skin simply pulls back as it decomposes making it APPEAR as though they are still growing.

The tallest dog in the Guinness Book of World Records stood at 7'5" tall (on his hind legs). He was a Great Dane.

There’s a misconception that, in the War of 1812, Canada burned down the White House.  Canada didn’t exist in 1812.  The British burned it down...twice.

Dancing in the Dark was the last song written and put on the Born in the USA album because his producer said it needed a pop song. It is still Bruce Springsteen’s highest charting single which made it to #2.

Springsteen also write Fire (kinda of a rape vib to it) and Pink Cadillac and gave them to the Pointer Sisters.

The residential school system in Canada for Native Americans was in effect until 1992. Despite the many, many, many abuses uncovered in the system.

One of the world's most prolific serial killers Robert Pickton was suspected of killing 49 women between 1983 to 2002 in BC. He would feed the women's bodies to his pigs.

In Canada the longest sentence you can get is 25 years with no possibility of parole. There are no consecutive sentences. So even Robert Pickton only got 25 years. Period. Yay Canada. Even Paul Bernardo could possibly get out of jail one day.

Canadians say sorry so much that in 2009 there was a law passed saying that sorry cannot be used as an admission of guilt.

Nintendo trademarked the phrase "It's on like Donkey Kong" in 2010

Sunflowers can help clean radioactive soil. Japan is using this to help clean Fukashima. Almost 10,000 packets of seeds have been sold to the people of the city.
